2 out of 5 stars Doug Aldridge is an awesome guitarist   June 18, 2008
I got this DVD to see more of Doug Aldrich. His playing and the material overall was better on the Whitesnake DVD performed in London.

1 out of 5 stars DIO is no more!   August 24, 2006
2 out of 5 found this review helpful

I love Ronnie James Dio and all the music he has created ever since ELF (which was an awesome band that made catchy Lynrd Skynrd-esque tunes).

DIO the band were mammoth in the 80s. They had huge stage productions that rivaled that of KISS, Iron Maiden, and even Pink Floyd! DIO had a huge concert following therefore leading them to play in sold out arenas world wide. Just watch The Sacred Heart and Last In Line Concert on DVD or the rare Dream Evil Tour footage (featuring a huge robot spider, a laser shooting guitar,an elevated drum riser and towering pyrotechnics!)

Sadly DIO's quality of music began to fade in quality after the strange highways tour (1994).

Not only did the music fade in quality but so did Dio's powerful operatic voice. Ronnie's style stayed stagnant in 1988 and he refused to update his look or the quality or sound of his band. Therefore his fame decreased and people forgot all about DIO.

This DVD presents DIO performing in a sold out club. Ronnie's voice is shot. He looks as if he never changed his clothes since 1988. He appears very old and frail but still he manages to move around the stage rather well. He is over 60 so it does make sense that he looks old but these days rock stars usually get face lifts and hair transplants. I guess not Dio. Jimmy is no longer the good bass player he used to be. Thankfully Rudy Sarzo is the newest bassist but is not featured on this DVD. Rudy can actually play more than just three notes per song and he has much more live enthusiasm. Doug is a great guitar player but for some reason he did not want to stay in the DIO band. Craig Goldy of the Dream Evil and Magica era has stayed loyal to DIO but hasn't yet produced as excellent quality of sounds as Doug has done. The drummer Simon Wright can sometimes be a great drummer. His drum solos are usually amazing! All Dio needs to do is fix the quality of his voice and stop mumbeling every time a song stops. Also long gone are the lasers, stage props, pyro, and huge lighting designs. Instead you only get two screens showing digital images. The film quality of this DVD release is grainy and looks worse than even the sacred heart release which was released in the 80s. If you are a huge Dio fan from way back then you may like this DVD because the drum solo is cool and so are the songs performed.

I suggest watching Sacred Heart on DVD. It is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic   December 4, 2005

This is Dio the way you want to hear and see him. Great show, the sound quality is very good. This is a professional production. Dio fans love his music so I want go into that, but yes, the live versions on this dvd sounds better than the ones on the albums. I read in another review here that Dio is over 60...but he`s born July 10`th 1949...so he`s 56....

5 out of 5 stars Finally a successor to Vivian Campbell!!!!   September 7, 2005

Finally Dio has found a guitarest worthy to fill Viv's shoes, and that man is Doug Aldrich!!! I mean, Dio had some fantastic players over the years in Craig Gouldy and Rowan Robertson, but neither of them could compair to Viv's "street", dirty style of playing. Aldrich fills the bill and then some! Aldrich played for some great bands as well: Hurricane, Lion, House of Lords and his own band Burning Rain, all fantastic. I still remember Lion's cover of "The Transformers" theme song!! How cool was that! This live DVD is excellent quality and Dio is in top form and looks every bit a metal God! The whole band on this performance is top notch. However, the main reason to buy this DVD is Aldrich! This guy should have been a household name in the 80's like Lynch, Van Halen and the like; He just came along a little too late. Be sure to watch the video for the single "Push", which is in the extras...this song is by far the best thing Dio has done since the 80's. Now, Aldrich has moved on to Whitesnake (where I think he is much more well suited) and Dio has once again gained the expertise of Craig Gouldy and has also added Rudy Sarzo on bass.
So, in closing, if you are a Dio fan, a metal fan, or a guitar player fan, buy this NOW!!! You will not be disappointed....
